“CYPRUS INSVLA…”, Cartes Générales de toutes les Parties du Monde, Paris, Pierre Marriete, 1665
Nicolas Sanson d’Abbeville
Copper engraving, 374 x 484 mm, modern colour
This map of Cyprus was published by Pierre Mariette, copying the first two maps of Janssonius, the ones based on Blaeu. Mariette’s map was included in Nicolas Sanson d’Abbeville, Cartes Générales de toutes les Parties du Monde, in Paris in 1665. In this map, as in its prototypes, the ancient districts are mentioned while the toponyms are medieval. An ancient aqueduct is depicted near Salamis. The coats of arms on the upper margin of the map refer to the Lusignan Kingdom of Cyprus and to the Ottoman Empire. The cartouche is crowned by an Eros.
