Olfert Dapper

This map of Cyprus is taken from Olfert Dapper’s book, first published in Amsterdam in 1688 with the title Naukeurige Beschryving der Eilanden in de Archipel der Middelantsche Zee. The prototype of the map is one of two maps, the map of Blaeu or the map of Janssonius. There are some minor variations in the spelling of some of the toponyms between the original and the copy. Dapper’s map is distinguished from its prototype because of a new allegorical marine composition at the lower right corner that replaces Blaeu’s Aphrodite and swans.
