“CYPRUS INS: / [insets:] STALIMINI I. / CHIUS INSUL. / MITILENE INS. / NEGREPONTE IN. / CERIGO INSUL. / RHODUS INS.”,Gerardi Mercatoris Atlas, Amsterdam, 1630

Jodocus Hondius

Copper engraving, 355 x 493 mm, contemporary colour, Latin

The great Gerard Mercator (1512 – 1594) never published an individual map of Cyprus himself. This Cyprus map was introduced into Mercator’s Atlas by Jodocus Hondius, who purchased Mercator’s plates and added new plates of his own design and construction to the revised edition. This new map of the island is based on the Ortelius map of 1573 and features a row of six inset maps of Greek islands beneath Cyprus: Lemnos, Chios, Mytilene, Euboea, Cerigo and Rhodes. The present map is taken from the 1609 French edition of the Atlas, translated by Lancelot de Voysin from the Latin edition. Editions of this map were published in many languages until 1641.
