Louis-François Cassas
Copper engraving, 234 x 410 mm
This engraving depicts the port and city of Keryneia, particularly the castle of the Lusignans — with its Venetian additions — at the water’s edge. Palm trees surround the castle, lending an oriental colour to a decidedly Lusignan setting. Ottoman elements here include a mosque and its high minaret just beyond the castle walls, while figures dressed in Ottoman clothes, one of them smoking a pipe, are visible on a large rock in the foreground. A few fishermen, most likely Greek, are visible just to the right. At the background Agios Ilarion castle is depicted.
