Αρχαίοι Ολυμπιακοί Αγώνες και Νόμισμα / Ancient Olympic Games and Coinage

The lecture entitled “Ancient Olympic Games and Coinage” was given in 2004 on the occasion of the return of the Olympic Games to Greece. Now published, it provides an interesting record of this sacred institution as well as of the ancient site of Olympia. In parallel with the testimony provided by excavations, literary sources and inscriptions, the coins of Elis, ranked among the most beautiful of the ancient world, provide valuable information on this supreme institution. The coinage of Elis, the city that used to host the Olympic Games, in tandem with the coins of other minting authorities featuring illustrations of the Games, provide a wider understanding of the religious, economic, political and artistic dimensions of the ancient Olympic Games.
