The Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation, in collaboration with the Department of Antiquities, invites you to take part in an event at the Aghia Thekla monument, next to the Costanza Bastion, on Saturday, 18 September 2021, at 17:00 pm. The event, intended to showcase the monument’s icon stand and holy water spring, launches a series of events to promote Cypriot monuments that are less known to the public, in order to bring out the need to protect them. The icon stand and holy water spring of Aghia Thekla, unseen today, lie within the medieval wall of Nicosia, next to the Costanza Bastion. According to a local tradition, on the present-day site of the icon stand, there stood an old church dedicated to St Thekla. In 1567, the church was demolished by the Venetians as part of the city’s fortification with new walls to ward off the impending Ottoman invasion.

The event invites the public’s participation in the following activities: cleaning the site, bringing out the well and holy water spring, placing informative placards and guide signs, as well as touring the site.

The event is realized in the framework of the European Programme H2020: ReInHerit, “Redefining the Future of Cultural Heritage through a disruptive model of sustainability” by the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation. ReInHerit makes up part of the Horizon 2020 CSA Programme on the theme Culture beyond bordersFacilitating innovation and research cooperation between European museums and heritage. It proposes a particularly innovative model of sustainable heritage management by disrupting the current status quo of communication, collaboration and innovation exchange between museums and cultural heritage sites.

Duration of the event: 17:00 pm – 18:00 pm

A professional photographer will cover the event.

Participants are required to follow all health protocols.
