Moments at the Museum: The Visitor by Eric Emmanuel Schmitt

12 Theatre Performances

How strange, my dear Freud; one would say that, all of a sudden, you would like to believe... to wallow in certainty.

In a special room reminiscent of earlier times, at the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation in old Nicosia, The Visitor by Eric Emmanuel Schmitt opens in a Pancyprian first with Varnavas Kyriazis playing the father of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud. The performance will be available for a limited run in the framework of the BOCCF’s “Moments at the Museum” series.

Vienna 1938. The Nazis have invaded Austria and are persecuting the Jews. Sigmund Freud, a believer in the future, refuses to leave. But on this April evening the Gestapo arrest his daughter, Anna, for questioning. Freud is alone and desperate when suddenly a stranger comes in through the window. Who is he? A mad man? A magician? Is this merely a dream? Is he an embodiment of our perception of Freud’s subconscious? Or are we to believe him when he says he is God in person?

Translation and direction by Andreas Araouzos. Starring, alongside Varnavas Kyriazis: Panayiota Papageorgiou, Fotis Apostolides and Andreas Araouzos. Stage set and costume design by Thelma Casoulidou. Stage lighting by Costas Charalambous.
