This folder includes facsimiles of six original engravings by Louis-François Cassas from the Foundation Collections. The engravings depict views of Cypriot towns: Kerynia, Larnaca, Famagusta, Bellapais and St. Hilarion. Louis-François Cassas was a designer, engraver, sculptor and archaeologist, who visited Cyprus twice, in February and April of 1785. Today, the few designs of Cassas make up the first successful attempt at a figurative representation of these Cypriot monuments that have been largely celebrated by artists and writers alike. In 1799, the edition Voyage pittoresque de la Syrie, de la Phénicie, de la Palestine et dans la Basse Egypte came out in Paris together with the six sheets of Cassas featuring views of Cyprus. This edition is perhaps the most important illustrated book on 18th century Middle East and Cyprus.
