The engravings and the old photographs, which constitute the earliest known depictions of Cypriot monuments, towns and people, are of significant historical value and complement corresponding documents.
The great majority of engravings are incorporated in books such as Corneille Le Brun, Voyage au Levant…, Delft 1700; others remain printed on separate sheets, such as the portrait of Caterina Cornaro by C.G. Schultze of 1770 and the series of engravings of Cypriot landscapes by Louis Francois Cassas, published in Paris in 1799. The collection includes also a folio of Tristram Ellis, ,Twelve Etchings of the Principal Views and Places of Interest in Cyprus, London 1879 which was published the same year as John Thomson’s, Through Cyprus with the Camera in the Autumn of 1878, London 1879, which contains the earliest known original photographs of Cyprus.
