With a retro esthetic and a romantic mood, French comedy “Populaire” closes the series of summer screenings at Faneromeni 17. The film, impeccably reviving the 1950s, has won the Audience Award at Athens’ French-speaking Cinema Festival in 2013, whilst being nominated for five César Awards.
Spring 1958, Normandy. Twenty-one-year-old Rose lives with her father, a grumpy widower who runs the village’s central store. Engaged to the mechanic’s son, she seems destined to lead a housemaker’s quiet life. When she travels to Lisieux looking to work as a secretary, she messes up during the interview but proves she can type with extraordinary speed. The boss, Louis, is intrigued – so much so that he announces a speed-typing competition which Rose must win in order to get the job. In fact, he proposes to become her personal coach.
