The lecture on “Curating and collecting: a reciprocal relation” is delivered in the context of the visual arts exhibition titled “Rooms to Contemplate: Content and Perspective of a Collection”, curated by Dr Savvas Christodoulides. The exhibition presents artworks from the largest private collection in Cyprus, that of the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation.

What is the relation between curating an exhibition and collecting? Does not a curatorial proposal constitute in a way an ephemeral collection of private and public character? And, vice versa, does not a collection of artworks or books equal a unique and curated group of objects?

The lecture looks at this relation of reciprocity between the curator’s task and the collector’s work, bringing out their common features. Drawing on the example of “The Magic Circle” (2012) exhibition, the speaker investigates how a temporary and imaginary collection of works and objects functions as identity, as metaphor and as pedagogical tool and, eventually, as an alternative proposal of narrating contemporary Greek art. Deep down, both curating and collecting are processing ways to achieve the survival of images.
